The IYTA offers Seniors Chair Yoga teacher training in both face to face workshops AND Online.   The course content is the same, and covers the anatomy of the aging body, the 12 most common medical issues of senior yoga students and managing pain. The course is focused around how to plan and run Seniors yoga classes with an emphasis on Chair yoga postures, breathing techniques, movements and modifications.

Details of Training Options

Instructor: Beryl Broadbent

This 15 hour fully online yoga teacher training will cover the anatomy of the aging body, the 12 most common medical issues of senior yoga students and managing pain. The course is focused around how to plan and run Seniors yoga classes with an emphasis on Chair yoga postures, breathing techniques, movements and modifications.

The course is structured in the following way:

  1. The Aging Body
  2. Medical Issues of the Aging Body
  3. Pain Management
  4. Pawanmuktasana – Joint Loosening
  5. Seniors Chair Yoga Classes
  6. Assessment

There are 3 online lectures of up to 60 minutes each, 3 Chair Yoga classes, recommended reading, and reflection questions and an open book, approximately 2 hour, Assessment.  This course is available to sign up to and begin anytime, once signed up you have 3 months to complete the course.

  2. Certificate of Completion: You will also receive 15 CPD points for successfully completing this course.  The Certificate of Completion counts towards your hours of yoga teacher training.

Day 1 Schedule 9am to 5pm (Total contact: 7 hours)

  • Practical 1.1 – Explore the practical considerations of Yoga of an aging body – the limitations and challenges to be expected.
  • Practical 1.2 – Explore the practical considerations of the 12 common medical conditions to include Arthritis, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, Back Pain, Depression, Anxiety, Dementia, Scar tissue from surgery (e.g. mastectomy).
  • Practical 1.3 – Facilitator led activities to explore the benefits of senior’s yoga; class planning; intentions and goals; themes; room set-up; support of spine and alignment; warm-ups and movements.
  • Practical 1.4 – A full class of warm-ups, postures, Pranayama and relaxation.

Day 2 Schedule 9am to 5pm (Total contact: 7 hours)

  • Practical 1.5 – Postures and their variations on the chair.
  • Practical 1.6 – A facilitator led series of flows and sequences – including a Pawan Muktasana – joint loosening; arms series; legs series; sun salutation; and Pranayama series.
  • Practical 1.7 and 1.8 – Practicum of teaching chair yoga to seniors – upper limbs; lower limbs; side stretches; forward and backward arches; balances and twists.

Certificate options

  1. Certification of Attendance: Simply attend the two days for a Certification of Attendance – these hours will count towards your CPD hours
  2. Certificate of Completion: You will also receive the on-line lectures, the pre-study workbook and take a two hour open book assessment and then receive a Certificate of Completion which counts towards your hours of yoga teacher training. Your assessment task is expected to be completed within 2 weeks of attendance of your course. Contact the Course Supervisor if unable to complete within this time. As a Graduate you will:

  • be able to describe 8 aging and 8 common medical issues in senior yoga students and their ability to practice yoga safely
  • be able to show 10 Modifications to simple moves and 5 breathing techniques to support the aging body and lifestyle
  • be able to plan a 1-hour seniors chair yoga class, taking account of their holistic needs and safety
